With the days slowly but surely getting longer, we thought it’s a good time to put together a list of five delightful walks near Mirefoot Cottages for you to enjoy during your stay. These walks range from short, family-friendly outings to full-day adventures in the high hills, perfect for bagging Wainwrights. Whichever walk you choose, you’re sure to experience a day of adventure and stunning views.
Orrest Head
Just above the town of Windermere lies the low peak of Orrest Head. This short trail winds through woodland before opening up to breathtaking views of the full length of Windermere Lake at the top! The trail is designed to be accessible to all, with no stiles or “off-path” sections, making it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. It’s a perfect short walk for families or anyone looking to work up an appetite before exploring the many cafés, restaurants, and bars nearby. Rydal Caves
Embark on a hunt for Rydal Caves, an incredible place to explore! This out-and-back walk takes you along the peaceful shores of Rydal Water, leading to the impressive Rydal Cave. The flat trail follows the lake from one end to the other. With the Badger Bar halfway along the route, you have a perfect spot to refuel before heading back. Parking is available at White Moss Car Park, which is very close to Grasmere – perfect for a quick stop to grab some of the famous gingerbread.

Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge
Nestled just before the Langdale Valley is the picturesque village of Elterwater. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, the village’s slate buildings add to its charm. From Elterwater, enjoy a scenic stroll along the river to Skelwith Bridge, where the river transforms from a gentle stream into bubbling waterfalls. (Please be very careful on the rocks around the waterfalls!) Chesters by the River makes for a lovely pit stop to enjoy some cake and coffee before retracing your steps to Elterwater, where you can admire the stunning Langdale peaks along the way. In Elterwater, the Britannia Inn is a popular choice for walkers looking to rest their tired legs, offering a great selection of local ales.

Catbells
The steep climb up Catbells is well worth it for the stunning views at the top. Situated beside Derwent Water, this hike takes you high above the lake, offering panoramic views of the Lake District fells. There are several options for starting this walk, but a great choice is to begin at The Theatre by the Lake on the edge of Keswick. This area has a pay-and-display car park with café and toilet facilities, making it an ideal spot for a picnic when you return. Although it’s approximately a 50-minute drive from Mirefoot, the scenic route winds through beautiful hills and valleys, leading to Keswick.

Kentmere Horseshoe
Not for the faint-hearted, this epic horseshoe route covers eight Wainwright summits along the way. The 13-mile Kentmere Horseshoe is a full-day adventure suited to experienced walkers. Just a 5-mile drive from Mirefoot, the route begins in the small village of Kentmere and climbs high onto the tops. From here, you’ll make your way around the summits, with breathtaking views of landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, including Kentmere Reservoir, Kirkstone Pass, Haweswater, and the surrounding hills and tarns. Be sure to prepare for all weather conditions and bring plenty of supplies. While challenging, the rewards are more than worth it!
