Exploring Westmoreland
Until 1974 Westmoreland was the name of a county in the north of England. Today it survives as part of a place name, Appleby-in-Westmoreland.
Location and Jurisdictions
Westmoreland, before 1974, was bounded on the north and west by Cumberland, on the northeast by Durham, the east by Yorkshire and the south and southwest by Lancashire. It contained 763 square miles, with a population in 1821 of 51,359. Westmoreland is essentially an inland county but a narrow corner reaches the sea in the southwest. For an outline map of the old county boundaries of England visit www.genuki.org.uk/big/Britain.html.
In 1831, in the structure of the Church of England, Westmoreland was split between the Dioceses of Chester and Carlisle, both within the province of York. There were 32 parishes. In civil matters there were two baronies, Kendal and Westmoreland (or Appleby) and four wards, Kendal, Lonsdale, East and West. For the assize courts this area fell within the northern circuit and sessions were held at Appleby. After the first parliamentary reform bill passed in 1832 the county sent four members to Westminster, one from the town of Kendal and three county representatives.
